  • Retirement Planning for First-Generation Immigrants: Where to Start

If you’re the first in your family to build a career and financial life in the U.S., retirement planning can feel like navigating without a map — no one handed down the playbook. Here’s a starting point.

Start by getting honest about the gap

Many first-generation professionals underestimate how much they’ll need, because they’re comparing their plan to what their parents had (often a pension or none at all) rather than to their actual future cost of living.

Three pillars worth building, in order

1. An emergency fund first — before investing aggressively, make sure a short-term shock won’t derail your long-term plan.

2. Tax-advantaged retirement accounts — understanding what’s available to you (401k, IRA, and employer matches) and actually using them.

3. A secondary income stream — many of the families I work with build long-term security through real estate cash flow, not retirement accounts alone.

A common trap: waiting for someday

The families who end up furthest ahead aren’t the ones who started with the most money — they’re the ones who started with a plan, however small, and stayed consistent.

If you’re not sure where you stand relative to where you need to be, that’s exactly the gap a free consultation is designed to close.
